The objective of this project is to create an artistic augmented reality experience that explores the conspicuousness of heterotopia in Auckland’s Rurban environment. Through the use of geo-location, we have placed three terrariums that represent heterotopia, coined by Michel Foucault, as the intersection of places and spaces, also known as an “other space” (Foucault, 1986). There are three outcomes developed including 3d models, an augmented reality application accessed from IOS devices and a website that contextually represents the project in the publicly accessible spaces.

It will be enjoyed just as a visual beauty, but also have an emotional experience as well. As we worked with a new platform, and new technology, the project has had to be scaled somewhat and the output was limited in technical scope. Each digital terrarium is taken as separate entities that have their own story detailed on the website. Information around this installation is integrated on this website so that our presence will not be needed at all interactions with the media.


What has been achieved…

The terrariums included in this experience are placed to identify heterotopias that perhaps others would not have noticed if it had not been drawn to their attention. “Heterotopias function in relation to all other space, the point being that heterotopia is a usefulconcept in so far as the heterotopic space invites reflection on its relation to other spaces” (Rymarczuk & Derksen, 2014). Through
the outputs, an understanding should be drawn that it is the in between spaces that make the whole more interesting, regardless whether it is digital, physical or purely of the mind. Through modern technology, we hope to have communicated Foucault’s theory of heterotopia as he understood it as well as from the many developments that have been discussed over time. Further expansion would be in the area of L-Systems and further interactivity included in the application, and increasing the applications interactivity. Terraritopia has much that could be developed on, however in its current form, it identifies relevent heterotopias of the local area and guides users to understand the hidden pockets of space around them.
